The unique 2,200 square foot, full-color, FŌTERA® resin-based terrazzo floor installation covers the entire floor of the entrance to the Great Hall at the History Colorado Center in Denver, CO. The 234 pre-cast, full color FŌTERA® concrete terrazzo tiles, created with a dimensional tolerance of 7/1000”, resolve into a topographical map of Colorado when viewed from the upper levels of the building. Radio-Frequency ID tags embedded into the floor allow for a myriad of interactivity between the art and the people who travel across it including discovery of historical, cultural, and environmental facts about the State of Colorado.

FŌTERA® Concrete Terrazzo

2008

This 1,618 square foot FŌTERA® concrete terrazzo map of the headwaters of the Potomac River is integrated into the central plaza of downtown National Harbor, a $4B development overlooking the Potomac River near Washington, D.C. Local cities, including icons and key monuments famous to each, are identified in this outdoor, public art, environment. Hidden imagery of regional wildlife and portraits of important local figures are veiled throughout the installation, creating a sense of discovery for viewers that evokes the exploratory spirit of John Smith’s surveying of the region in 1608. The names of these icons are inscribed on the faces of granite benches that line the length of the balcony, which creates a game to engage people to discover, learn, and enjoy.

FŌTERA® Concrete Terrazzo

2007

From afar, commuters see the Cornerstones of History mural depicting important activists, artists, and symbols that were instrumental in transforming the social fabric of Northeast Washington D.C. As one approaches the intersection where this FŌTERA® concrete terrazzo public art piece is installed as part of a fountain, the central images reveal four monumental portraits honoring Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rosa Parks. The curved wall forming the mural makes these central figures appear to burst out of the background. When the water feature is activated, the water flows on either side of the mural, reminding the viewer that these historical figures embody change and renewal.

Authorizations for this project were granted by Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self-Development, the Estate of Mercer K. Ellington, The King Center, AP – Wide World Photos, Inc., and CMG Worldwide, Inc.

FŌTERA® Concrete Terrazzo

2005

Monumental portraits of Hippocrates of Cos, John Gorrie and Elizabeth Blackwell provide a powerful presence at a great distance but are also appreciated at close range, since the images are created from thousands of small pieces of stone and recycled glass aggregate. From a distance, viewers see the strong yellows and tans in the Hippocrates panel, the russet shades of the Gorrie panel and the sepias and blues in the Blackwell panel as large vibrant color fields that stand out against the red brick and white marble architecture. As one approaches the exterior niches, the terrazzo murals reveal language fading in and out of each monumental portrait honoring the predecessors of modern medicine and are inlayed into the building’s architecture. This text and icons specific to each doctor contribute to the portrayals of Hippocrates the ancient scholar, Gorrie the inventor and Blackwell the first woman in the United States to receive a medical degree.

FŌTERA® Concrete Terrazzo

2005

This urban environment incorporates FŌTERA® concrete terrazzo, and engraved brick into a public art piece covering over two miles of sidewalk, connecting the Largo Town Center and the Morgan Boulevard Metro stations. 36 FŌTERA® concrete terrazzo murals, representative of Maryland and the City of Largo, are set into the sidewalk with brick pavers engraved with poetry, quotations, and factual references spiraling out from each icon. Also, two mosaic walls, one that highlights the local historic figure Garrett Morgan and one that includes a 20′ compass rosette mosaic in front of it, both fabricated by Cheryl Foster, complete the design. As commuters traverse between stations, they read the passages and view the colorful mosaics and FŌTERA® concrete terrazzo icons.
